In the 2026 FIFA World Cup run-up, the International Football Federation filed trademark applications in the Metaverse. Trademark lawyer Mike Kondudis announced on Twitter on Wednesday.
FIFA has already done a lot in preparation for the long-awaited championship, which will be held in Qatar in November, thanks to several partnerships with blockchain and cryptocurrency firms. The fact that FIFA is carefully planning the next World Cup, which will take place in four years, shows that the football organization is interested in expanding Web3.
According to the application, FIFA plans to digitize the merch and sell it in the Metaverse’s virtual stores. These items include virtual clothing and accessories such as hats, glasses, and sports equipment.
In addition, in the application, the International Football Federation indicated trading in shares, cryptocurrencies, the creation of virtual crypto exchanges, and the provision of financial and monetary services. This confirms FIFA’s intentions to expand into the blockchain ecosystem.
Previously, FIFA made deals with the leading cryptocurrency exchange Crypto.com and the Algorand blockchain network. FIFA is currently busy developing digital assets based on Algorand for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.
