The Metaverse is reaching a new level of pop culture. The annual music industry’s prestigious MTV Video Music Awards will present Moon Person for “Best Metaverse Performance” for the first time.
The nominees are Ariana Grande, BLACKPINK, BTS, Charli XCX, Justin Bieber, and Twenty-One Pilots. Here’s how each artist on this list interpreted their performance in the metaverse.
For example, Ariana Grande brought cosmic ideas to a virtual Fortnite concert. Popular contemporary K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, dressed up in virtual avatars, set the scene on fire at PUGB Mobile. BTS, who brought K-pop to the masses in their time, performed their latest English-language hits, “Butter” and “Permission to Dance,” on stage in Minecraft. Their avatars recreated the group’s famous dances. Charli XCX and Twenty-One Pilots chose Roblox for their concerts. And Justin Bieber put on a show at Wave, a virtual entertainment platform.
It’s worth noting that these aren’t the only artists performing in the metaverse. The popularity of virtual concerts, including in the metaverse, came during the pandemic. Virtual concerts will also remain as the metaverse becomes more firmly established in everyday life. The MTV VMAs have already agreed with this statement.
