Large and popular sportswear and footwear company Nike made a huge step towards the metaverse back in December last year by acquiring RTFKT Studios, known for its original digital sneakers sold as NFT assets . The other day, both companies introduced the first joint product – NFT sneakers based on the Ethereum blockchain.
The RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis CryptoKicks are digital wearables that are apparently meant to be used in the metaverse. This was announced by the RTFKT studio, posting a short teaser video on Twitter, from which it also became clear that the appearance and style of the sneakers can be changed using a bottle of Skin Vials.
Nike’s first CryptoKicks can be unlocked via RTFKT’s MNLTH NFTs, which were released free of charge in February to owners of RTFKT’s CloneX profile picture valuable NFTs and other previous RTFKT NFTs.

The release of the collection also became available after a series of challenges and puzzles that collectors had to solve before RTFKT launched a website allowing owners to open the mysterious NFT vaults. Some owners have already appreciated this feature, posting on their social networks that MNLTH vaults contain a pair of CryptoKicks, one Skin Vials and a second MNLTH vault.
To unlock the second vault, the company will also launch a series of quests later this year, according to the official FAQ on the RTFKT Discord server. Each pair of CryptoKicks will also have an “evolution path” that will allow the wearer to upgrade their NFT sneakers.
Already, some owners of the RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis CryptoKicks collection are trying to resell NFT tokens in the secondary markets. So, for example, on the popular OpenSea marketplace, these sneakers can be found for at least $14,800 or 5 ETH.
It is known that in December 2019, Nike received a patent for CryptoKicks, a blockchain-based system in which digital assets can be paired with a physical product. However, this new iteration of CryptoKicks is significantly different in approach. The RTFKT FAQ on Discord describes it as “the rebirth of Nike CryptoKicks by RTFKT, starting with the Evolutive skins.”
