Two Spanish football clubs, Real Madrid and Barcelona, join forces in the Web3 space. According to the latest tweet from trademark and patent lawyer Mike Kondudis, football clubs have filed a joint trademark application that combines virtual reality and cryptocurrencies, as well as other offerings in the field of cryptocurrencies and virtual games.
According to the lawyer, both clubs intend to create a gaming experience in virtual reality, virtual clothes, shoes and hats, and software for managing cryptocurrency transactions.
Earlier in June, the English Premier League filed a similar application. A month later, English Premier League football club Crystal Palace decided to file a separate application covering NFTs and cryptocurrencies.
It is estimated that more than 2,700 metaverse-related applications were filed with the US Trademark and Patent Office between January 1 and May 31, compared to 507 in the same period last year. More and more companies see the potential in the metaverse. Data from McKinsey & Company shows that global investment in the metaverse reached $120 billion through May of this year, more than double last year’s total.
In addition, NFT-related trademark applications are also on the rise. Mike Kondudis reported that more than 4,000 NFT-related trademark applications were filed with the US Trademark and Patent Office between January 1 and May 31, 2022, up from 363 applications a year earlier.
Metaverse-related filing trend extends beyond sports and tech companies. American bakery Panera has also trademarked “Paneraverse” as it accelerates its expansion into Web3.
