According to South Korean media reports, Seongnam, the local, regional capital, will offer its residents the possibility of citizenship through non-fungible tokens (NFTs). To do this, the mayor’s office planned to completely recreate the city within the virtual Metaverse to provide residents with access to unique opportunities.
According to a statement from the city administration, by April 2023, the city authorities should complete work on the project. The digital service will go live, and the metaverse will be operational around May or June next year. NFT citizenship opportunities will give people the right to access a considerable amount of municipal information.
The Seongnam city government said that the final decision on implementing the NFT initiative would be made at the upcoming city hall meeting in October this year. It was previously reported that the country’s capital, Seoul, is also building a virtual city in the Metaverse. Last month, a test opening of the digital space was held.
The journalists recalled that Seongnam is a satellite city of Seoul. Most likely, the development of digital worlds will occur in parallel.
According to analysts, many initiatives will be tested in the virtual world of Sonam and only then transferred to the Seoul metaverse. They assured that the construction of these worlds is part of the program for the global restructuring of South Korea and the digitalization of its economy.
