This Documentary Will Be Funded By The NFT

A new documentary about Anders Hofmann’s Iceman’s attempt to complete the first long-distance triathlon in Antarctica will be funded by NFT sales. The film is called “Project Iceman” and that’s why this initiative is worth paying attention to.

The funding round through the sale of NFT comes after producers turned down a $1.25 million offer from a popular streaming service due to “limited creative freedom.” Instead, the project aims to create a community around the film, whose members will become “investors and digital owners of the film.”

The fundraiser includes the acquisition of NFTs in four different rarities , with benefits including access to the film’s virtual and physical premieres, access to future NFT events and launches, and ownership of 10-second clips from the film itself.

As part of the project, Hoffman swam 3.9 kilometers in icy water, biked 180 kilometers on a glacier and ran 42.2 kilometers in harsh Antarctic conditions, including endless snowstorms.

“Project Iceman” is one of a number of projects using cryptocurrencies, Web3 concepts such as DAO and NFT to disrupt the outdated concept of the film industry. For example, a number of film projects have launched NFT crowdfunding, challenging the traditional paths that the film industry offers. Among these projects is the indie film Calladita, which was partially funded by the decentralized autonomous organization Nouns DAO in exchange for a product placement deal that would see its NFTs featured in the film.

There are already film funding companies, such as Decentralized Pictures, which use DAO-like structures to determine which projects will receive funding. For example, the nonprofit recently teamed up with Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh to launch a $300,000 filmmaking grant on the platform.

In addition, NFT projects such as Bored Ape Yacht Club, World of Women and CryptoPunks have long gone beyond simple works of art on the blockchain and are now ready to conquer Hollywood – a trilogy of short films Bored Ape Yacht Club, supported by the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, is already in development.

But NFTs not only act as fundraisers for film production, they are in some cases. Examples include “Zero Contact” starring Anthony Hopkins and the upcoming “Killroy Was Here” directed by “Clerks” Kevin Smith. And NFT authors are exploring the possibilities of creative applications of NFT – crypto artist pplpleasr in her Web3 video project Shibuya will give NFT holders a voice in the creative direction of each project launched on the platform.
